Time to soak up some summer sun – but do it safely!
Summer’s here! In addition to slathering on sunscreen, you may want to start taking antioxidants such as grape seed extract for extra protection from the sun’s rays. Research is increasingly showing that when taken internally, certain chemicals in plants work like sunscreens, fighting the free-radical damage caused by the sun and filtering harmful UV light. Two additional antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin (found in green leafy vegetables and egg yolks), may also provide sun protection from within, according to a study in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology.
When women took a lutein-zeaxanthin combination for two weeks, the supplements gave them four times more sun protection. An added bonus – the subject’s skin was about 50% more hydrated after taking the antioxidants. Now your skin won’t feel so dry when you’ve been soaking up some summer sun, and an added bonus is that the lutein-zeaxanthin combination prevents macular degeneration. See our article here on how to Take Care of your Eyes – naturally!
A National Institutes of Health study found that a combination of diet and exercise cuts the risk of developing Diabetes Type 2 by 58%. Now that’s something to motivate you to get to the beach this summer, with a carefully chosen sunscreen, and start running, swimming, walk the dogs or play frisky with the children!
