Curb Hunger and Cravings with Bitter Hop Extract
A gastrointestinal-targeted bitter hop extract (Amarasate) has been shown to reduce hunger and food cravings in individuals with obesity. According to recent research, the extract works by modulating hunger signals through the gut-brain axis, providing a potential non-pharmacological approach to managing weight. The study highlighted the extract’s ability to significantly curb cravings for sweet and savory foods, offering promise as an aid for those struggling with overeating.
Unlock the Benefits of a Healthier Gut
Akkermansia muciniphila, a powerful gut bacterium, supports gut health by strengthening the intestinal barrier and stimulating mucus production. This reduces inflammation and helps regulate glucose levels and fat storage. Studies show that higher levels of this beneficial bacterium are associated with improved metabolic health, making it a key player in preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes. Incorporating ways to boost its presence in your gut could naturally enhance your overall well-being.
In Loving Memory of Sue Visser
It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Sue Visser in July. Sue was a cherished figure in the world of natural health and wellness. As the co-founder of Nature Fresh, Sue was a passionate advocate for natural healing and devoted her life to educating others about the power of nature in restoring health and vitality.
We met Sue and her husband Jim 25 years ago when they had just formulated their fluoride-free toothpaste. Sue spread health and happiness wherever she went. She was an author on our expert panel for many years, contributing invaluable insights on topics such as food, heavy metals, gluten sensitivity, and blood type.
Sue's contributions have touched countless lives, and her legacy will live on through her work, her teachings, and the natural products she developed. She was more than just an expert product developer in her field – she was a beloved friend, mentor, and inspiration to many.
Our deepest condolences go out to everyone at Nature Fresh, her family, and all those who knew and loved her. May we all carry forward her wisdom and dedication to natural health.
Microplastics in Tea Bags
Recent studies have revealed that certain tea bags release microplastics when steeped in hot water. Made from materials like nylon or polyethylene terephthalate (PET), these tea bags can shed billions of tiny plastic particles into your drink, potentially posing health risks. To avoid ingesting microplastics, consider switching to loose-leaf tea.
Loose-leaf tea is free from plastic contamination and often provides a richer flavour. Brewing it is simple: use a stainless steel or glass infuser, place the leaves inside, pour boiling water over them, and steep for the desired time. This method not only reduces your exposure to microplastics but also supports environmental sustainability by eliminating the need for disposable tea bags. Embracing loose-leaf tea can enhance your tea-drinking experience while promoting better health and a cleaner planet.
Headaches in Children and Cola
A study found that in a staggering 91.7% of cases, headaches in children can be linked to caffeine intake in the form of cola drinks. Dr Shevel, Chairman of the South African division of the International Headache Society, explains, ‘Caffeine is both a diuretic and a vasoconstrictor. This means that it causes dehydration which sets off headache, and it also impacts on the arteries, resulting in migraine.’
The study tested 36 children over a period of 5 years and found that the average amount of cola guzzled by adolescents was an incredible 11 litres a week. Participants in the study were encouraged to achieve gradual withdrawal, which resulted in complete cessation of headaches in 33 of the 36 children. Dr Shevel advises that children who suffer from headaches due to drinking caffeine-containing drinks should reduce their intake gradually, as otherwise they may experience withdrawal headaches.
Caffeine is not only linked to headaches but is a highly addictive substance and causes children to become hyperactive. Parents and pediatricians need to encourage children to try healthier drinks. ‘Drink water, there is nothing better for you!’ concluded Dr Shevel.
Honey more effective than antibiotics
In the first study of its kind University of Sydney researchers have found proof that some honeys can be more effective than antibiotics in treating surface wounds and infections. Unlike antibiotics, which only work on some bacteria, the honeys worked on all the infectious bugs tested, including one that was resistant to 13 different antibiotics. Critically, the bacteria did not adapt and develop resistance to the honey.
‘There is an urgent need for new ways to treat and control surface infections,’ said Associate Professor Dee Carter. ‘New antibiotics tend to have short shelf-lives, as the bacteria they attack quickly become resistant. Developing effective alternatives could therefore save many lives. Our research is the first to clearly show that these honey-based products could in many cases replace antibiotic creams on wounds and equipment such as catheters. Using honey as an intermediate treatment could also prolong the life of antibiotics.’
The honeys tested are produced by bees that feed on Leptospermum plants, commonly known as tea trees and native to Australia and New Zealand. The research was published online in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
‘Since 1952 the medical profession has had the means to reduce or reverse the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. In large measure, those martyred by dementia are showing the results of toxicity from mercury, aluminium, lead, cadmium, arsenic and other heavy metals. Their neurons have been poisoned. They are turned into Alzheimer’s victims directly through the efforts of dentists who blindly follow the party line of their trade union organisation, the ADA.’ ~ H Richard Casdorph (co-authors of Toxic Metal Syndrome: How Metal Poisonings Can Affect Your Brain)
Hormonal Migraines
Do you suffer from migraine-type headaches around menstruation time monthly? ‘Migraines that begin before a period usually mean that energy is flowing up towards the head in an aggressive way; Chinese medicine requires control of this upward-moving energy. The remedy to use is a liver remedy called Relieve Internal Wind with or without Purge Heat taken close to the time one would expect the migraine. In other words take the first remedy continuously for a few months and add Purge Heat a few days before the expected onset of the migraine for about 10 days. A company called Chinaherb sells these two products through most health shops and pharmacies. One can also stop a migraine by taking nicotinic acid 100 mg x 5 tablets and repeat after an hour or two if necessary. Expect to feel a flush in the upper part of the body which can be uncomfortable for about 30 to 60 minutes. These are contradictory treatments yet both work.
